With New Hampshire sports betting now online through DraftKings Sportsbook, which New England state will best tap into the Massachusetts market? King of games fruit machine.
We are regulated by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement as an Internet gaming operator in accordance with the Casino Control Act N.J.S.A. 5:12-1 and its implementing regulations. Sports betting is legal in a number of states including New Jersey, Mississippi, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and more. However, there are separate laws for mobile sports betting. Some states only betting in a physical casino. The following map shows the states in which DraftKings is legal for mobile sports betting.
Previously, Rhode Island was the only state close enough for Massachusetts residents, especially those in Boston.
DraftKings officially went live with NH sports betting last Monday. Even with little public information available, it looks like New Hampshire could win the battle for Boston’s bettors.NH sports betting signups start fast
Pent-up demand for sports betting in New Hampshire appears to be very high.
DraftKings Sportsbook registered more than 6,000 players on the first day of NH sports betting. They all combined to bet more than $250,000, a significant amount for a Monday without an NFL game.
That demand did not slow in the first full week of wagering:

Many of those bets likely went on now-dead futures wagers for the New England Patriots, just like Gov. Chris Sununu‘s ceremonial first bet. He bet $82 – he’s the 82nd governor of the Granite State – on the Patriots to win this year’s Super Bowl.
It was the last step for Sununu and New Hampshire to maintain his earlier word that he’d place a bet on the Patriots in his state before season’s end. At that time, regulators hadn’t even decided on what company would be getting a New Hampshire sports betting contract.

The New Hampshire Lottery didn’t break out specifically how many of those accounts were from out of state, but the total from Massachusetts was “significant,” according to The Associated Press.
Overall, the first day’s results are very promising, lottery reps added.
It seems natural that Boston-based DraftKings would seek the more than 4.5 million people in the metro area. Not only is it DraftKings’ backyard, but it’s also more than three times larger than New Hampshire’s 1.4 million population.Rhode Island not out yet
Just because NH sports betting got off to a quick start doesn’t mean Rhode Island is throwing in the towel.
The Rhode Island Lottery launched its mobile sports betting product through IGT and William Hill at the beginning of the NFL season.
Account registrations have been slow to grow, however, because of Rhode Island’s in-person registration requirement. As of Dec. 2, Rhode Island had fewer than 8,000 people complete the registration process at one of Twin River‘s two casinos.
That pace could grow if a new trial program currently being tested by Twin River succeeds. Potentially ready within the next week, the unidentified program was developed as the next evolution of the RI sports betting product to get more activations completed, a Twin River spokesperson said.
The spokesperson did not provide additional details about how the program would function, but said it was not designed in response to New Hampshire.
While the majority of US states struggle to pass sports betting legislation, lawmakers in Rhode Island have now done it twice in consecutive years.
The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a bill that will authorize statewide online and mobile wagering. RI sports betting first became legal late last year, but implementation has so far been restricted to in-person betting at the two Twin River casinos.
The Senate bill (S 37) now awaits a signature from Gov. Gina Raimondo, whose 2019 budget deserves credit for the original law.RI sports betting going mobile
As passed, the bill will allow Twin River to deploy a sports betting website and mobile app for eligible bettors anywhere within Rhode Island.
There were no major bumps in the legislative road along the way. The Senate first considered the bill on Feb. 6 and passed an amended version one week later. The measure then charted a similar course through the lower chamber, culminating in a lopsided 64-8 vote on Tuesday.
Despite the support, some lawmakers maintain reservations about the legality of online sports betting under existing statutes.

Rep. Blake Filippi is among the skeptics, and he made a motion to add an intermediate step to the process. His amendment would have asked the RI Supreme Court to opine on the constitutionality of the legislation — specifically on whether online betting constitutes an unlawful “extension of gambling activities.”

Those with strong memories might remember that Rhode Island was the first state to consider sports betting after the US Supreme Court repealed PASPA in May 2018. The very next day, lawmakers cemented the pillars for RI sports betting during a pair of committee hearings.
Although it wasn’t part of the final bill, mobile wagering was part of that hearing. So was DraftKings.
Sarah Koch, the company’s assistant director of government affairs, visited Providence to testify on behalf of what was, at the time, a DFS company with sports betting aspirations. Here’s what Koch had to say about mobile betting:
“… In most case law the precedent shows that what matters is where the bet is accepted — not necessarily where the bet is placed. So as long as the casino is accepting the bet from their location, they could accept them from anywhere within the state of Rhode Island.”
Lawmakers were unconvinced at the time, but the legal opinion DraftKings presented seems to have swayed the minds of some. The new bill essentially codifies the logic Koch laid out. Here’s an excerpt:
… Wagers are accepted by a server-based gaming system located at the premises of a hosting facility authorized to accept sports wagers and administer payoffs of winning sports wagers; all such wagers shall be deemed to be placed and accepted at the premises of a hosting facility.DraftKings Sportsbook Rhode Island?
Despite DraftKings’ initial interest, the door to the Rhode Island market has closed.
The RI Lottery administers sports betting, and licensure is exclusive to the Twin River properties. They use a combination of IGT and William Hill to power retail sports betting operations, and there’s no reason to expect that relationship to change under the expanded law.Draftkings Sportsbook Nj
Although the bill allows wagering anywhere within the state, it also requires in-person registration at a casino. It will not facilitate entry for any external brands, including the likes of DraftKings Sportsbook and FanDuel Sportsbook.Draftkings Sportsbook Sign Up
There is no apparent timeline for mobile expansion either — just yet.
